Focusing on the research and development of medium and high-speed electric motorcycles, "Kolo Transportation" has launched a global layout of vehicle sales

Jun 04, 2024

In recent years, the popularity of the new energy vehicle industry has attracted attention from both inside and outside the industry. With the influx of hot money and industrial upgrading, the upstream and downstream industrial chains related to new energy have become increasingly perfect. In this context, as a traditional category, motorcycles have also entered the era of electrification. In the context of the automotive industry's earlier transformation, the electrification of motorcycles has also stimulated the enthusiasm of entrepreneurs. In recent years, a group of electric motorcycle startups have emerged in China, and financing related to them has become increasingly frequent.

Jiangsu Keyroad, which has recently been in contact with 36Kr, is a manufacturer specializing in the research and development of medium and high-speed electric motorcycles. The company was established in June 2017 and is located in Changzhou, Jiangsu. Currently, Jiangsu Keyroad has released four electric motorcycles for global sales.

In the view of Dai Jie, founder and CEO of Jiangsu Keyroad, traditional electric motorcycles in China are mostly upgraded from electric two-wheeled vehicles, and are not truly motorcycles. From the perspective of motorcycle electrification, electric motorcycles have faster speeds and larger dimensions, and the corresponding product standards are also different from the former. He believes that the speed of electric motorcycles should be around 100km/h, and their overall size, load capacity, driving experience, and power configuration should be compared to traditional high-performance motorcycles. Therefore, the maximum speed of the products currently launched by Jiangsu Keyroad is not less than 100km/h.

In terms of driving experience, Jiangsu Keyroad Transportation has developed a central motor to balance the weight distribution of the entire vehicle, thereby providing better driving experience and stability for high-speed vehicles. In addition, Jiangsu Keyroad Transportation will combine the central motor with the gearbox to further reduce the vehicle's weight and provide greater torque for motorcycles, resulting in higher overall electrical efficiency and greater economy. Jiangsu Keyroad Transportation stated that, taking its KT25KW high-voltage architecture platform launched in 2021 as an example, the electric motor can reduce the weight of the entire vehicle by 30% and achieve an energy efficiency of 98%. In terms of vehicle configuration, Jiangsu Keyroad Transportation's motorcycles all adopt vehicle-level motor controllers, ABS braking systems, and battery modules, achieving benchmarking with the quality of new energy vehicles.

At present, the product models of Jiangsu Keyroad Transportation include: ES1 positioned for urban off-road, TS1 positioned for load-based operating tools, CS1 positioned for daily commuting vehicles, and the high-performance flagship motorcycle RS1. Among them, RS1, as a high-performance motorcycle, can reach a maximum speed of 130km/h, a maximum range of 200km, and accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 5 seconds.

With the gradual introduction of traditional fuel motorcycle production suspension policies in countries such as Europe and America, the huge incremental space in the overseas two-wheeled motorcycle market has attracted many electric motorcycle companies to enter. As a global company, Jiangsu Keyroad set its target market at the beginning of its entrepreneurship in overseas regions with a strong motorcycle culture and a large user base, such as Europe, the United States, and Africa. It has successively obtained entry permits for vehicle production, product usage, and other aspects in countries such as Europe, the United States, and Australia. At present, the ES1 of Jiangsu Keyroad has become the first Chinese-made high-speed electric motorcycle adopted by the US and Spanish police. At the same time, ES1 has also been delivered in small quantities to the military of the United Arab Emirates and Singapore, and the military of Indonesia and Thailand are also undergoing final certification for ES1 installation. Global dealers have also given high praise to RS1, which is expected to enter the procurement catalogue of government official vehicles in more developed countries in Europe and the United States and many Belt and Road countries.

Dai Jie said that due to different policies and markets in different countries, motorcycle cultures abroad have their own characteristics, and the demand for motorcycle use also varies. Therefore, Jiangsu Keyroad develops products based on consumer demand. There are many high-end consumer players in countries such as Europe and America, and the ES1, priced at around $7000, has been sold in 34 countries. In the Italian market, ES1 has also become the product with the highest registration rate for civilian electric motorcycles. In regions such as Africa where the motorcycle rental industry is developed, Jiangsu Keyroad has specifically developed the product TS1 for load operation. Currently, the product has received orders from four African countries and has started mass delivery.

In terms of charging, Jiangsu Keyroad provides two solutions for different needs: household chargers and charging stations. The company also provides customers with chargers that are compatible with charging voltages in different countries. Faced with high-intensity application scenarios in the African market, the charging cabinet provided by Jiangsu Keyroad can simultaneously charge 6-9 batteries. At present, Jiangsu Keyroad has reached a cooperation agreement with Shell to install charging cabinets in Shell gas stations in Africa. In the future, Jiangsu Keyroad will also work with partners to provide users with fast charging solutions for tributaries. In addition, motorcycle rental and online ride-hailing services in Africa are accelerating their expansion. In response to the operational needs of local customers, Jiangsu Keyroad has also developed vehicle management systems and battery rental solutions based on online payments for local customers. The solar charging project in collaboration with local operators and the government, as well as the green power supply project for energy storage cabinets, are being closely promoted.

In terms of sales, Jiangsu Keyroad has built a global sales network and established operational centers in Europe, North America, and Africa, expanding sales scale and after-sales service scope through both direct sales and distribution. Tinbot, a subsidiary of Jiangsu Keyroad, will triple its warehouse and office space this year, striving to become Jiangsu Keyroad's sales center, logistics service center, and after-sales support in Europe, increasing the current 200 agents to 800 within three years. At the same time, the two assembly lines of Jiangsu Keyroad and its West African partners are also about to be shipped. In the future, they will serve as important pivot points for Jiangsu Keyroad's Africa strategy, gradually advancing from West Africa to Central Africa, East Africa, South Africa, and North Africa. Jiangsu Keyroad is willing to develop the African business unit into the "transmission" of China's electric motorcycle industry.

At present, the ES1 under Jiangsu Keyroad has reached an annual shipment scale of 1000 vehicles, and the TS1 for the African market has entered a rapid expansion stage. After small-scale trial production, the CS1 has also entered the final stage of standardized mass production. Jiangsu Keyroad will further expand its To B business in TS1 and CS1, and its cooperation with Iran Post and Mexico Post is rapidly advancing. It will also utilize its current sales network in Europe to enter the delivery and express electric motorcycle market. Currently, 90% of delivery and express motorcycles in Europe are pedal-based. Jiangsu Keyroad's TS1 will become the first mid-mounted straddle delivery and express electric motorcycle to obtain EEC certification. Based on the above market layout and application scenario development, Jiangsu Keyroad is expected to have an annual shipment volume of over 20,000 vehicles and sales revenue of over 400 million yuan by 2025.

At present, Jiangsu Keyroad has a total of 52 employees, with R&D accounting for 20%.

Jiangsu Keyroad CEO Dai Jie stated that electric motorcycles are about to face a new wave of reshuffle, and the market has reached a critical stage of aesthetic iteration for the two rounds of products. He hopes that the company can seize the opportunities of the times, and the market and technology opportunities will become an innovative and technology-based enterprise with grounded prices and products that can be implemented. Striving for progress while maintaining stability, not only doing a solid foundation, but also overlooking the stars and the sea from afar.
